BEST 2015 Alumni
Q1. Wilson, what did you gain from the BEST Programme?
"The most valuable gift is having the chance to learn and think like business executives in conglomerates."
Wilson: I think the BEST Programme is very rewarding that I do not only gain friendships, but also connections and business insights. Largely because BEST is a very well-structured programme that lasts for more than a semester, through interactive lectures, site visit and group project, you get to learn from peers of various specialization, nationalities. Meanwhile, I think the most valuable gift is having the chance to learn and think like business executives in conglomerates. As a new comer to the business field, it is rare that you can have first-person experience in strategic planning in property, MICE, transportation, hospitality, all you can name it under New World Group, from executives' perspectives.
Q2. How did the BEST Programme benefit you when you applied for internship at NWS and when you joined the A. Entrepreneur Adventure Programme earlier this year?
"It’s the insight and better understanding of the corporate culture and business give you edge over the others."
Wilson: First and foremost, I must emphasize that the selection process is completely fair and open! Yet, once as an insider, it’s the insight and better understanding of the corporate culture and business give you edge over the others. For example, everyone should have always heard of The Artisanal Movement at New World Group, but how is this related and embedded in our business decisions? Indeed, my artisanal experience in BEST and NWS has helped my team in implementing design thinking, creating a product that fits the company’s culture, and most importantly, the dedication to details and determination for excellence drove us through the 24-hour hackathon.
Q3. We have two modes of study this year – Challenger and Explorer. If you were able to join the Programme again, which mode would you opt for?
"Challenger implies that you are willing to step out, with passion to learn about how conglomerates operate, and aim high!"
Wilson: Surely I would love to join the Programme as a Challenger if I could! Despite it requires more commitment to be devoted, Challenger implies that you are willing to step out, with passion to learn about how conglomerates operate, and aim high! In which, the exclusive 1-to-1 coaching and tournament day attract me the most. As freshmen, it is rare having the chance to be coached individually by an experienced business insider, obtaining personalized advice on career and building valuable connections. If you aspire to become a successful businessman, Challenger is the way for you to have a head start.
Q4. What is the value of being a BEST Alumni Club member after you graduate from HKU?
Wilson: Maybe it’s the golden opportunity to share with you all here? Indeed, I take great pride being an alumnus of the BEST Programmme, joining the Club to nurture young business talents like you all. The Club is not the final destination, but an everlasting hub gathering some brightest minds that you can always be intellectually inspired. Being a Club member, I can stay connected with my New World mentors and batchmates and to exchange thoughts with youthful new joiners. Even after graduation, I still get the chance to expand professional network and participate in the Group’s private event, for instance, tour to the brand-new landmark by the harbour, Victoria Dockside. In short, BEST is more than an enrichment programme, there are many treasures awaiting your tremendous devotion.
